If you can dream it, people have already begun to do it.

A millitary branch, known as the Department of Human Purity (DHP), has been created to respond to fears and dangers surrounding this growing poulation of altered and enhanced human-beings.

Thirty-something Venice, California-based writer and entrepreneur Gabe Smith has always had an affinity for storytelling and animation. From envisioning himself as a real life 'Calvin' from Bill Watterson's iconic Calvin and Hobbes strip, to storytelling with sock puppets and wall-shadows, playing make-believe, and acting out skits that he made up with friends and family, Smith was looking for a creative outlet from a very early age.

Even through stints as a Guitar Center salesman, real estate agent, musician, a home mortgage loan officer, 911 EMT first responder, and a general manager for Motel 6 and G6 Hospitality – jobs which paid the bills – Smith kept that spirit alive writing screenplays and potential storylines for comics.

In 2012, Smith's vision become reality with the creation of his own publishing company, Human Comics; he self-published the first issue of his cyberpunk comic Human, and then negotiated a deal with Diamond Distributions for the title as a continuing series, now on Issue 3, which is expected to hit shelves and digital outlets in late spring 2015.

The company focuses on creating original fictional narrative content that can be translated from comic book format to larger multi-media projects for major studios and game developers.

"My biggest inspirations as a writer are still Calvin and Hobbes, and JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy … and The Hobbit," Smith says, adding his Human series -- Anthropocene: The Human Saga – came out of a curiosity as to where mankind would be in two centuries, in the new epoch of humanity.

"I just made fairly logical predictions about what the social atmosphere of our planet would be like 200 years from today, then applied those concepts in the context of a dramatic fictional narrative," he says. "I liked the idea of a kick-ass bounty huntress as a main character, and the trans-humanist element of my story provided me with the ability to write a lot of action packed and dramatic encounters."

Smith, whose current reading list includes the comic titles Saga, East of West, and Lazarus, credits his successful first two titles to the relationship he -- as a writer and creator -- has with the various artists he works with.

"It's just a matter of living in that same fictional world together," he says "The more time you spend together talking about it and conceptualizing the world within the story, the more vivid and believable it will be for the readers and audience.

"Although it isn't absolutely mandatory, in my experience, it is preferable to have opportunities to work in the same room together when other artists are involved. One of the themes of Human is how technology can separate us as people; I often ponder how modern-day appliances might devalue the quality of my own relationships by removing personal interaction.

"But the most important thing is that everyone involved is passionate about the project. If that's in place, then the chances of putting out a good comic book are pretty good."

As to the future of Human Comics, Smith looks to what other independent publishers have done in the industry in the past decade.

"My comic book inspirations were independent publishers like Valiant and Image; Image of course is a Top 3 publisher today, but they were new back then," he says. "I'm also a fan of Boom/Kaboom, Bongo, IDW, Dark Horse ... Okay all of them. I'm basically a fan of anybody publishing good comic books."

That's Smith's ultimate goal … continue publishing the engaging Human series, while adding new titles, writers and artists to the fold, and just producing memorable comics.

"I just want to keep coming out with more quality projects ... more stories … more artwork. Just more of what I've already been doing," he says. "That's success for me."
